Posted
By Derrick Forsythe, Record Sports Editor
The Post 122 Senior Legion team has an abundance of depth but limited experience this season. With just six of its 18 players within the age range of the AAA level, Warrenton will rely heavily on a group of underclassmen.“We’re kind of a young team this year,” said Coach Kevin Shough.Six of the players return from last year’s Legion season, including two who played for Wentzville.Jakob Junker will headline the crew and is expected to serve as a utility player.“He will probably see playing time just about everywhere on the field for us,” said Shough.Post 122 will also look to Austin Meine, the team’s only player from Wright City, as a primary pitcher and shortstop.Trevor Bradshaw, who played at Wentzville last season along with Junker, will start in the outfield, while also pitching.Kenny Dildine also returns considerable experience and will serve a similar role, pitching and playing outfield.Paul Inman is expected to pitch as well as possibly catch.Warrenton will look to legion veteran Arik Rader to play third base and catch. Also returning from last season is Luke Darity, who will start at second base.In addition, Corey Eckenfels has been a staple for the Post 122 program and will likely serve all over the field.Other returners for Warrenton include Taylor Duvel, as a pitcher and third baseman, Justin Ohmes at first base and Carlos Raygoza in the outfield.“It’s kind of a building year for us, but I think we’re a pretty solid team from what I’ve seen in practice,” said Shough. “A lot is going to depend on how the kids handle it mentally, playing against much older players.”A cast of younger playerswill fill in the remaining roles, including at catcher, where Jacob Abel is expected to start. His sophomore-to-be classmate, Sawyer Junker, will be counted on considerably in his first Legion season.“He’s one of our youngest players, but he’s got the ability as long as he remains comfortable,” said Shough.Jack Darity will play second base and possibly pitch.Newcomers in the outfield include Austin Dixon, Hunter Russell and Garrett Capstick.“We’re optimistic with what we have even though we are a young team,” said Shough. “We won’t be throwing people into something they can’t handle.”Post 122 currently has 18 games scheduled.
Warrenton Post 122 Senior Legion player Paul Inman pitches against St. Charles during the season opener on Wednesday.
