It was too little too late for the Warrenton Post 122 Junior Legion team.A 5-2 win over Daniel Boone on Sunday helped avenge an earlier defeat but was not enough for a postseason berth.“We’re finishing the way I thought the boys should have played all along,” said Coach Ken Dildine. His team waited until its back was against the wall to make a run, ultimately ending the season 4-14.Warrenton had surrendered a lead to Daniel Boone in the first meeting, losing 5-1 in extra innings. This time Post 122 wouldn’t let the same mistakes spell defeat.“The boys did a fantastic job today closing the game out for me,” said Dildine. “It was a great win for us today.”Brandon Purkaple went a full seven innings on the mound, striking out six and walking five. He allowed five hits and gave up three runs, one of which was earned.“Purkaple really stepped up,” said Dildine. “He pitched really well and also came through with a big triple with bases loaded.”Warrenton would need Purkaple’s timely hitting, trailing 2-1 in the fourth inning.James Dotson put Post 122 on the board in the bottom of the first, scoring off a single by Austin Dixon after reaching base by walk.Daniel Boone scored twice in the fourth inning, using a pair of singles and an error to advance home.“We lost to this team by errors last time,” said Dildine. “We wanted don’t those same mistakes to be costly again.”Post 122 had six batters on the base paths between the third and fourth innings, advancing none home. In the fifth, Warrenton would get another opportunity, placing its first three runners on base.Dotson singled, scoring Matt Dildine to begin the rally.Clayton Schowe reached home off a hit by Dixon, who advanced on an error.Purkaple’s big hit scored Dotson to give Warrenton a 5-2 advantage heading into the sixth. It was a product of nine total hits for Warrenton, which showed better approach at the plate.“They hit the ball well and actually recognized the curve ball,” noted Dildine.Daniel Boone wouldn’t threaten again until the seventh, when it plated a runner on a sacrifice ground ball.Dildine says he was concerned about his starter’s pitch count, which reached 116.“I was a little leary at the end,” said Dildine. “I decided to let Purkaple go.”Purkaple finished with three hits, while Dixon added two and was responsible for two RBIs.“He and Austin have made a big influence on our team this year as far as stepping up and giving me those hits when we needed them,” said Dildine.Dotson also had two hits and scored two runs.Chris Garrett and Collin Leslie each recorded one.SEASON ENDSDerrick Forsythe photo.
