What had been strongly a lopsided game through six innings began to shift in the bottom of the seventh for the Warrenton Post 122 Senior Legion team. His team trailing by six runs, Arik Rader entered in relief and shut down visiting St. Charles. Warrenton cut the gap but couldn’t complete the rally, falling 9-6 and dropping to 0-2 on the season. Chad Berrey, who is taking the reigns from Kevin Shough with intentions of becoming the next head coach, says Rader nearly got the job done for Post 122. “We told Rader he was going to be our long relief, and he came down and did his job,” said Berrey. “He’s solid, so we look for him to be our long reliever the whole year.” Jakob Junker had started but faced two troublesome innings, the first and fourth, during which he gave up three runs apiece. “We’re counting on Junker to pitch a lot of innings for us, so we put him in,” said Berrey. “His pitch count got up there. They were fouling a lot of balls off.” Berrey honored Junker’s request to leave the mound after four innings.Post 122 managed to get its bats rolling as the game unfolded, and Berrey says that is partially due to slow starting generated by the team’s inexperience. “We have a lot of young guys, so getting their feet wet and trying to get them going is the hardest thing,” said Berrey. Until the seventh, Warrenton had managed to push just two runs across. But the momentum began to turn in the fifth inning. “They piled on their runs when we had our errors and with their bloop hits,” said Berrey. “Then we put Rader in, and he shut the door. He was lights out.” Corey Eckenfels reached by walk in the first inning, eventually scoring after two more teammates reached on walks and a hit-by-pitch. Junker singled in the fifth and also advanced home. In the seventh, Post 122 managed to keep the base paths hot, sending across four runs. Kenny Dildine and Luke Darity collected consecutive singles, while Taylor Duvel and Jacob Abel each walked. “We took a couple of walks, which if they’re going to give them to us, we’re going to take them,” said Berrey. Dildine finished with three singles, while Junker added a pair of hits. “Once we got our young guys to start hitting and calming down, our older guys are going to get the job done,” said Berrey. “It’s the younger guys that are following the lead of the older players.”

Warrenton Post 122 Senior Legion pitcher Jakob Junker started on the mound during a 9-6 loss on Tuesday.
