Memorial Day services were held across Warren County on May 26 as residents honored those members of our nation’s military who made the ultimate sacrifice.

In Warrenton, residents gathered with the Tribute to Veterans Memorial Board, the Marine Corps League Richard Scott Haymes Detachment 1393 and VFW Post 2180 for a service at the Warrenton Elks Lodge.

Andrea Romaker, of Warrenton, was the guest speaker at the service. She spoke about her family’s military history, including her late son, Lieutenant Tyler Romaker, who was killed in a crash while not on active duty in 2016.

“I’ve never worn the uniform, been to war, been wounded or scarred in a battle, I’ve never left my family for months to travel across the world and defend my country, … I have no idea what war is like, but what I do know is this, many gave their lives for the freedom that we have today. Freedom is not free,” said Romaker.

Residents also gathered at the Wright City Cemetery later that afternoon for another service where Amy Kessler addressed attendees about the importance of the day of remembrance.

“The Bible tells us there is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for another,” said Kessler. “This Memorial Day, let us remember to show respect and gratitude as Americans for the fallen.”

Retired Naval Sr. Chief Nathan Hernandez was the guest speaker at another ceremony that day held at the American Legion Post 180 in Marthasville.

Hernandez is the naval science instructor of the NJROTC at Washington High school where 60 students are involved in the program. The award-winning Washington Exhibition Rifle Team gave a special presentation during the program. Hernandez said, at the ceremony, he did not serve to gain money, medals or recognition, but for the country - for life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.
