It was no surprise that Donald Trump was named Person of the Year by Time magazine. Time began its long essay on Trump by saying it was the 90th time it has selected the person “who had the greatest influence, for better or worse, on the events of the year.”We don’t know if it is better or worse, the election of Trump. Only time will tell. Certainly the Trump campaign caught the attention of the world, making a number of countries nervous. Many Americans also are nervous as to what the future holds for America once Trump is president.Time said to the Trump believers, he delivers change — broad, deep, historic change . . . to his detractors, he inspires fear “both for what he may do and what may be done in his name.”Time also said by almost 2-to-1, voters cared most about who could deliver change, and in that category he beat her (Hillary) by 68 points.A point made by Time is whether Trump can devise a New Deal “for workers in the age of automation, renegotiate trade deals and reopen factories while simultaneously elevating many of the same people who profit from the trends he denounced.”It’s interesting to note that Time said the disdain for Trump “gave him strength.”Can Trump deliver on all his promises? We doubt it. There are too many obstacles — Congress, the government bureaucracy, Supreme Court, his own habit of sounding off and offending people, and the list goes on and on. He must establish himself as a trustworthy person — reinforce it with his followers, many of whom will be expecting too much too soon. The next four years are going to be filled with expectations. There will be disappointments. Trump must be able to get along with his fellow Republicans. That is a major challenge.Whatever happens, it promises not to be dull. No one has ever called Trump dull!
