A local group hosts events a few times a year to raise funds for the Greater Missouri Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association. The team host events like walk/runs, trivia nights, painting with a purpose, volleyball and golf tournaments. At these events, guests are encouraged to bring a picture of a loved one who was touched by Alzheimer’s disease. The photos are added to a memorial wall that accompanies the events. The group aim is to raise awareness, support and funds to help Alzheimer’s patients and their families, but they are a group of people, not a formal organization.“We’re a team who raises money for a nonprofit organization,” said Dee Lubs, the group’s founder.Lub’s mother, Judy Limbaugh of Warrenton, was diagnosed with the disease at 69 and died at the age of 74, after attending a few of the group’s events.Lubs said the team’s name is Family Ties and includes her sister Jana Davis, among others. All together, they raise money for the Greater Missouri Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association. The chapter raises money to provide services to patients in the region that includes Warren County.According to research provided by the Alzheimer’s Association:• Alzheimer’s disease is the sixth leading cause of death in the United States.• It kills more people than breast cancer and prostate cancer combined.• Since 2000, deaths by Alzheimer’s disease have increased by 89 percent.• More than 5 million Americans have Alzheimer’s disease. By 2050, that number could be 16 million. The Family Ties group has raised $55,000 in five years for the Greater Missouri Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association.“They say your life is made of memories and Alzheimer’s disease robs you of your memories,” Lubs said. “We want to raise money so no one else has to go through it.”Events are being scheduled. Next up is the group’s fifth annual Alzheimer’s “A Drive to Remember” golf tournament Saturday, July 29, at Warrenton Golf Course. The event has a 1:30 p.m. shotgun start.Golfers also can enjoy games like hit the beach and step up. Prizes will be given to players with the closest to the pin, longest putt and longest drive. The cost for the four-person monkey on your back scramble is $65 per person. Otherwise, the cost is $260 per team, $310 for team entry and hole sponsorship and $50 meat or hole sponsor. For more information or to sign up contact Bryan Lubs at 636-297-1017 or 636-456-2386 or the Warrenton Golf Course, 636-456-8726.Alzheimer's Association
