The Warrenton duo of Taylor Nordwald and Abby Meyers didn’t want their softball days together to end, so they committed to join the Jefferson College program in the fall.
Nordwald, a starting pitcher, and Meyers, a catcher, led the Warriors to the Class 4 state softball championship in October.
Meyers believes Warrenton’s run to the championship helped her attract attention after a quiet recruiting period the season prior.
“Junior year came around and it was kind of devastating when we didn’t get recruited a lot,” she said.
Nordwald invited Jefferson College Head Coach Tony Cook to a tournament, who liked what he saw and invited her on a campus visit.
After she committed, she worked on getting Meyers a spot.
“I saw Taylor was going to Jefferson and I saw Coach Cook,” Meyers recalled. “So I thought I might as well try. Coach Cook liked me, so it all worked out.”
Nordwald posted an 18-1 record with a 0.88 earned-run average for the Warriors in 119 2/3 innings of work.
Meyers finished the season with a perfect fielding percentage and hit .325 at the plate.
“I’m really proud of them,” Warrenton Head Coach Trevor Hibbs said. “This is what you shoot for as a player, to move on to the next level and have some success.”
Jefferson College is a junior college in Hillsboro, Mo., and the softball program is coming off a banner year.
The Vikings finished 55-6 last season and made an appearance in the NJCAA national tournament.
Meyers and Nordwald think they can make an impact as soon as they step on campus in August.
And after a slow start to their recruiting process, the duo is glad to have found a soft landing spot in Hillsboro.
“Considering last year at this time me and Abby didn’t know where we were going to go and no one seemed interested, it’s a dream come true to be in this spot,” Nordwald said.
Meyers agreed.
“We’ve had a lot of memories, so I’m glad we get to share more,” she said. “I didn’t know if I could do it, but this has always been my goal.”
