The long-awaited new Wright City High School building is hitting strides and is close to opening its doors to students in January of next semester.
Bobby Christopher from Wright Construction Services gave the R-II School Board an update during their Nov. 21 meeting.
On Nov. 11, the district officially took possession of the property and started to move furniture and equipment in five areas of the school.
Wright Construction is currently working on flooring and interior paint finishes specifically in the cafetorium and the corridor leading to the cafetorium, but they are on track to be completed by the end of the calendar year. In addition, the football locker room is up and will have contractors this week to get the walls and perimeters of the building done.
Visitor bleachers and the press box have also been established. Epoxy flooring for the kitchen is close to finished, as well as the system commissions.
The weather has been an issue throughout the entire project, but roughly three quarters around the building are either vegetated or planted. The completion of the baseball field is also weather dependent and they are hoping the field will dry out so fencing can be put up and turf can be put down.
Wright Construction’s aim is to get the baseball field done as soon as possible, but contractually it does not need to be done until March 31.
A lot has also been completed in the past month including the metal, siding and facade of the exterior, the base coat of the track, the canopy towards the main entrance and the auxiliary gym bleachers.
Christopher noted some roof shingles and a section of concrete will need to be replaced but they are in the process of doing that. Overall, finishing touches will mostly come down to the interior of the building.
“Bad news is we’ve lost about 10 1/2 documentable months on the job. The good news is we’re still going to be able to get the students in for the next school [semester],” Christopher said to the board.
The district will have a ribbon cutting and grand opening ceremony on Dec. 21 at 1 p.m. This event will allow the community to celebrate and receive a tour of the new school.
