Wright City sophomore Morgan Nute did it again, but this time she placed third out of 91 golfers, tying with Sara Kolar, at the Class 2 girls golf State Meet on Oct. 22 at the Fremont Hills Country Club.
Nute had previously placed fourth as a freshman.
During the two-day event, Nute scored a four-over 75 on the 18-hole course. On day two, she scored an 82 for a total score of 157.
“I feel really good. I played really good on the first day and then the second day, I played really good. Today, just on the back, I struggled a little bit but I’ll take third place any day,” Nute said.
Coming into the state meet for the second year in a row, Nute said she felt less pressure because she knew what to expect.
“I was feeling pretty confident because I’ve been playing good recently," Nute said. “I was obviously a little nervous because it is a big tournament. It was kind of all the emotions, but I was mostly very excited.”
Nute had punched her ticket to state after placing fourth at the Class 2, District 1 tournament just a week prior. At the state meet, Nute beat one opponent and tied one after she had placed below them at districts.
Head Coach Shannon Wells had worked with Nute days prior to the tournament, making sure she was maintaining consistency in her swing, remaining focused and relaxing before she went into a high pressure situation.
Before Nute went into the meet, Wells told her to not play against the girls, but play against the course.
“She’s not really playing them. She’s playing against the course, so [I told her] to do the best she can with it and just have fun,” Wells said.
Nute certainly did have fun and said she enjoyed the opportunity to play with competitive golfers.
“I felt like it made me play better and it just pushed me harder than any other tournament,” Nute said.
Since the tournament was a two day long event, Nute focused on remaining poised.
“Two-day tournaments are always a little harder because it’s a pressure thing, but I just tried to keep calm and focus on the shot at hand, not think about the last one and just move on,” Nute said.
As her sophomore season came to a positive conclusion, Nute not only achieved her goal of making it in the top 15, she annihilated it.
“She ended up finishing pretty strong. Third place is always good. There’s nothing wrong with that,” Wells said.
