A Memorial Day Service will be held Monday, May 27, at the National Guard Armory, 1 Armory Road, Warrenton. The event will begin at 11 a.m. The public is invited to attend. The keynote speaker will be Army Spec. Joshua O'Donnell, who now serves with the Army National Guard. O'Donnell is a veteran of the conflict in Afghanistan. While serving overseas, O'Donnell earned a Purple Heart for wounds suffered during combat. He also received an Army Commendation Medal with a "V" for valor. The Memorial Day service at the National Guard Armory will close with a wreath-laying ceremony, a 21-gun salute and the playing of "Taps." The observance of Memorial Day dates back to the mid-1860s when widows of Union and Confederate soldiers killed during the Civil War met to lay wreaths and say prayers for those who died as a result of the conflict.
