A man who was implicated in a 2008 murder in Wright City was sentenced last week to 15 years in prison.
Kevin Harrison, 20, of Wright City, withdrew his not-guilty plea and entered an Alford plea in a hearing held Sept. 20. The case was heard in Montgomery County by Franklin County Associate Circuit Judge David Tobben.
Besides receiving 15 years for the second-degree murder charge, Tobben sentenced Harrison to 10 years for one count of armed criminal action and seven years for two counts of endangering the welfare of a child. The sentences will run concurrently.
As part of the plea arrangement, a first-degree murder charge against Harrison was amended to second-degree murder and 10 other felony counts were dismissed, according to Warren County Prosecutor Mike Wright.
He said Harrison must serve 85 percent of the 15-year sentence before he is eligible for parole. By entering an Alford plea, Harrison does not admit guilt, but does admit that the prosecutor has enough evidence for conviction.
The convicted gunman in the case, Leon Steward, 26, of St. Louis, was sentenced last August to 25 years in prison.
Authorities said Steward entered a residence located at 120 South Elm in Wright City on July 13, 2008, and shot 22-year-old Jonathan C. Reid at close range.
Reid was flown to St. John’s Mercy Medical Center in Creve Coeur where he died later that evening. He was shot in the chest, face and neck at close range, according to investigators.
While Harrison never went inside the residence, Wright said he rode with Steward looking for Reid and was in possession of a loaded handgun. The firearm was later found near railroad tracks in Wright City, Wright said.
Authorities said the murder was the result of an argument started over a PlayStation video game system between Reid and Steward. The shooting occurred in the living room of the home. Six children were at the residence at the time of the murder.
Steward was on the run for two days until he was apprehended.
Charges against Harrison and four others who were allegedly involved in the murder case weren’t filed until last June.
Others charged for their involvement are Heather Dowdy, 35, Antwan Jefferson, 34, and Sandy Crawford, 35, all of Wright City. All three have been charged with felony tampering. Semona L. Jones, 27, of Wright City, also has been charged with hindering prosecution.
Also wounded in the incident was 59-year-old Sharon Bush who lived at the residence. Bush was shot in the arm, but was not seriously injured.
