In a rare off night for its two sharpest shooters, the Liberty Christian girls basketball team found itself on the losing end of a 45-27 visit to Providence Christian. There were plenty of reasons for the Eagles’ most lopsided setback of the season, but some were more obvious than others.“This is the second game in a row where we’ve given up 25 offensive rebounds,” said Coach Sarah Gibson. “That is definitely an area for concern.”It meant a quick demise for the Eagles, who also struggled to put points on the board. In fact, the entire team managed to only meet the usual average of leading scorer Matilyn Voss, who has been consistently scoring between 25-30 points a night. She, along with second leading scorer Avery Dickson, were both out of sync offensively on Saturday.“They were having a hard time getting anything to fall,” said Gibson, whose team trailed 11-2 after one quarter. In a rare instance, Providence was able to stifle two typically reliable scorers rarely denied of their points.“Our offense struggled a lot,” said Gibson. “Their defense changed around a lot and did a good job of getting into Madilyn and Avery’s heads to shut them down,” said Gibson.Voss finished with 10 points and Dickson netted nine, but scoring woes were the least of the Eagles’ problems. Despite that, Liberty Christian led 17-16 heading into halftime.“We let up way too many offensive rebounds again,” said Gibson. “We gave them two or three chances every time down the court, and they took advantage of it.”She says much of the result was a product of effort, or lack thereof.“They just wanted the ball more than us,” said Gibson. “We weren’t boxing out, hustling and doing the things necessary to win the boards.”The Eagles managed just one bucket in the third period, trailing 34-19 after three quarters. There was just one performance worthy enough to garner the coach’s praise. Kaylen Jordan scored just four points but she continued to show significant improvement in the paint.“Kaylen did fantastic on the boards, and that’s something we’re looking for more often from her,” said Gibson. The Eagles will host Collinsville Christian on Thursday.LIBERTY CHRISTIAN GIRLS LOSEDerrick Forsythe photo.
