It was a matter of just sliding by for the Liberty Christian girls basketball team on Monday. The Eagles survived a lackluster performance, winning 29-28 over Providence Christian in spite of themselves.“We didn’t play our best game, but it was good enough for a win,” said Coach Matt Voss. “I think we tried to play at their level and ended up having a lousy game.”Liberty Christian had defeated the same opponent by 20 just a week earlier, but this contest held higher implications. The victory propelled the Eagles into the second round of the Metro Athletic Conference Tournament, setting up a meeting with Bethel Christian for Thursday.Voss says there will be no room for error against the next opponent.“We’ll have to play a lot better Thursday night to beat Bethel,” said Voss. “It will have to be one of our better games of the season.”Monday’s contest saw the Eagles lean heavily on the scoring prowess of Avery Dickson, who netted a team-high 14 points.Providence jumped ahead early in the low-scoring affair, leading 7-4 after one quarter.“We didn’t come out very strong,” said Voss. “We weren’t able to break away.”The teams were notched in an 11-11 tie at halftime, as Liberty Christian’s struggled to find balance. Providence’s physical presence inside presented concerns for the Eagles.“Their girls are tall, and they have some size, so that presented some problems for us,” said Voss.Matilyn Voss, usual contributor and complement to Dickson, was battling illness and couldn’t find her shot.Fortunately, the Eagles’ defense was sufficient and helped carry a 22-21 advantage into the final period.“I think the difference was they played a very aggressive game, and they didn’t call too many fouls,” said Voss. “They guarded really tightly on our two best players and made it very difficult for them to score.”Liberty Christian held on to that edge, even with one of its weakest shooting performances of the season.“They played better defense than us, but we were also missing our shots,” said Voss.
