Kloeppel Appointed to Fill Marthasville Board Vacancy

Mike Kloeppel was sworn in as alderman during the Marthasville board meeting Tuesday. He replaces Keith Hagedorn, who vacated his seat after his work schedule was changed. Hagedorn said he could not adequately fulfill his duties as alderman, but said Kloeppel would be a solid choice. Kloeppel, who was unanimously voted to the position, said he was excited, but admitted he had much to learn. "There's going to be a learning curve on how everything works," he said. "It'll take time to figure everything out, but so far, so good." Kloeppel was touted as the likely choice to take Hagedorn's position after showing interest during the May board meeting. He was appointed by Mayor Dale Verges. "He expressed an interest to serve in the community and I think it's a good idea to promote that," Verges said. "I'd like to see more citizens get involved in the city and I commend Mike (Kloeppel) for doing that," he added. Kloeppel does not have a background in politics, but said he felt he had the chance to learn something new and help the city achieve its goals. "It's a great opportunity to see how government works and at the same time, be able to help the city of Marthasvillle grow and head in the right direction," he said. Kloeppel said he was contacted by Hagedorn about taking over the vacated position after he learned he could no longer fulfill his duties. "Keith (Hagedorn) called me about the opening and explained to me how I would be helping the community," he said. "Just from being involved with other clubs I'm part of, I figured I would start somewhere." Hagedorn was re-elected this past April, leaving Kloeppel to finish out the remainder of his term. Because Kloeppel is assuming responsibilities in mid-term, he will now have to run for re-election next April should he want to try retaining his seat.
