Record Staff WriterThe Warren County Health Department will showcase the many health resources it offers this weekend. The department’s annual Family Health Fair returns this Saturday, March 28, in the Wright City High School gymnasium, located at 520 Westwoods Road. The day will begin with a 5K run and walk at 7:30 a.m. The Health Fair will open at 9 a.m. and last until 1 p.m. Admission is free.“Our goals this year are the same as each year,” said Ruth Walters, health department administrator. “We are promoting educational awareness on all health topics.”However, this year’s Fair will feature brand new opportunities for Warren County residents.“We are excited to showcase what we have been able to do with the Healthy Eating Active Living grant we received,” Walters said. “We will be featuring the debut of Grass Roots Community Gardens as well as promoting our Fitness Center activities.”According the Stacey White of the health department, Grass Roots Community Gardens will provide garden plots for citizens to purchase. After purchasing a plot, gardeners will be provided with all the materials they need to grow their plants, including seeds, tools, and water. There will be a meeting on April 9, at 6 p.m. at the health department for those who are interested in purchasing plots. In addition, the Health Fair will showcase the new location of the health department’s Fitness Center, where fitness classes for young and old are available daily.According to Walters, this year’s fair will also feature many new exhibitors. As in past years, exhibitors will offer health screenings, health products and services, and other prizes and giveaways. Herbs, vegetable bowls, and plants will be for sale. Over 80 vendors and exhibitors in total will be present. There also will be many children’s activities at the Health Fair. A children’s garden, where kids can learn about caring for plants and the benefits of gardening, will be available. Children can have their faces painted free of charge, and Ronald McDonald and the Easter Bunny are scheduled to attend. A children’s bike raffle also is planned. One boy and one girl will have an opportunity to win. The drawing for this raffle will occur at 1 p.m., and the winner must be present to claim their prize.Walters stated that they are expecting around 600 to 800 people to take advantage of the resources offered this year.“Citizens can ‘grow their health’ here by getting educated from the many vendors and resources that will be present, whether they get a health screening or learn more about promoted products or attend our 5K walk and run,” said Walters. “We hope people come out and take advantage.”For more information about the Family Health Fair, please call 636-456-7474.Health Fair
