GWCEDC fighting to prevent tolls on I-70

Posted
Members of the Greater Warren County Economic Development Council (GWCEDC) traveled to Jefferson City on April 1 to advocate for transportation funding alternatives that could address the state’s financial shortfall for transportation projects without imposing a toll on Interstate 70.The delegation met with more than two dozen legislators and state leaders to discuss transportation funding alternatives. Members of the Senate and House leadership and key transportation committees were targeted. The GWCEDC is recommending alternatives to tolling that local communities and businesses can support that will not be a detriment to the existing businesses and economic development efforts of the region. The GWCEDC encouraged members of the legislature to develop a comprehensive and sufficient transportation funding package using many of the alternatives presented to generate the funding necessary for Missouri to maintain a robust transportation system that will support commerce activity and bolster economic growth in the state, regions and communities.“Many of the legislators in leadership positions expressed strong opposition to tolling of our interstate highway system, however, until a funding alternative can be developed and approved, the threat of tolling Interstate 70 will continue. It is imperative that all communities and regions come together to craft a solution that solves the funding problem without resorting to tolls,” said Gary Carter, president of the GWCEDC Board of Directors. The GWCEDC is a non-profit organization that works to grow and strengthen the base of the region through collaborative efforts between the public and private sectors aimed at attracting and retaining jobs.
