GAC win puts Warrenton soccer in prime position

It didn’t come without challenges, but Tuesday’s GAC 2-0 win at Wentzville Liberty held significant implications for the Warrenton soccer team. The victory propelled the Warriors to 3-4 in conference play, but perhaps more importantly, it put them in prime position for a favorable seed in the district tournament.“It was a big game because it was both a conference and district opponent,” said Coach David Evans. “With us beating them, it should give us at least a three seed.”Warrenton’s win meant a sweep of Liberty this season, and the Warriors also have a win over Orchard Farm, who they must play again. They also have games remaining against St. Charles and Winfield, each of which previously defeated the Warriors.“We finished with the ball better tonight,” said Evans. “Hopefully that will fuel us going forward.”The win came in spite of some adversity, with the Warriors learning moments before game time that the varsity contest had been moved. With about half of his varsity players returning from a field trip to Six Flags, Evans relied on a primarily junior varsity cast to keep the score deadlocked at 0-0 until nearly halftime.“I was just hoping we could hold them off until the varsity arrived, and thankfully that happened,” said Evans. With the full crew on the field, the Warriors began to take charge.Sophomore Brittany Glazebrook put Warrenton on the board first, taking a pass from Colleen Bayer, who dribbled past defenders and into the corner. Glazebrook connected off the first touch with 10:00 remaining in first half. With the possessions slightly in Liberty’s favor, the Warriors’ defenders worked to prevent easy looks at the goal and were successful.Ten minutes into the second half junior Madi Stevens added the second goal, saving the ball from going out of boards and connecting from the nearside.“They weren’t getting great looks of the goal but we just weren’t able to hold onto the possession very well,” said Evans.Warrenton has played two its district opponents, beating Liberty and falling to Hannibal 2-1 in penalty kicks. If the remainder of the regular season plays out as Evans anticipates, the Warriors will likely lock horns with one of those teams against during the postseason.“I strongly believe if we get a chance to play again, we’ll beat them,” said Evans. The district tournament begins on May 16 at St. Dominic.WARRENTON SOCCER WINSDerrick Forsythe photo.
