By Patrick MacCoonRecord Sports EditorThe six Warrenton Freshman Legion players made a dramatic difference in the Ninth District All-Star Game as they combined for seven hits, six runs, and recorded the final three outs in the 13-7 win for the South Division Saturday in New Haven.“It made me proud to watch them,” Warrenton Freshman Head Coach Jamey Sherman said. “Our big bats stepped in and did big things. They produced with runners in scoring position. They did the program proud and were some of the biggest factors in the game.”After achieving success in the middle of the lineup for Post 122 this season, Mitch Burnette and Alex Vogt each finished with two-hit performances while driving in a combined five runs. They helped the South team jump out to a 12-3 lead in the second inning.“It was fun to play with all my teammates in the all-star game,” Alex Vogt said. “To have two hits in a game like this is pretty cool. I wasn’t the only one hitting, we all were.”Braden Lawson also started as he handled the catching duties for the first five innings. As a trusty backstop, he did not allow a passed ball and blocked many from allowing runners to advance. At the plate, Lawson singled to right field and was hit by a pitch. He drove in a run and scored twice.“He handled the pitching staff really well,” Sherman said. “To be able to work along with pitchers you haven’t caught all season and have success is not an easy task to handle, but he did a great job at catcher and also got on base several times.”Kory Schniedermeyer and Eli Ecton, second-team members, each came away with hard hits while playing in the field at third base and center field respectively.Chris Vogt recorded the final three outs from the mound in a 1-2-3 inning.“It felt good to succeed in that situation,” Chris Vogt said. “To be trusted to finish a game off was a pretty cool thing. The only weird part was I was having to work with a different catcher than Braden.”Chris Vogt also appeared in the Junior Legion All-Star Game along with Lawson.“The all-star game just reminds you to be relaxed and to just have fun when you are out there playing,” Chris Vogt said.First-base Coach Brian Vogt also agreed with the sentiment shared by his son.“We strive for our kids to have fun while playing strong baseball and giving attention to detail on the field,” Brian Vogt said. “One of the biggest keys to performing is staying relaxed and our guys did that and did it well.”With a strong showing at the plate and on the mound, the Warrenton all-stars walked away pleased with their strong performance in an All-Star Game victory.“They represented our program very well and did a great job,” Sherman said. “They left their mark in this game.”
