Final games tricky for Tuepker, Washington Seniors

On paper, it seems so simple.

Win one of the final two league games of the season and Washington Post 218 claims the Ninth District regular season title and a berth in the Zone 1 Tournament being held in Trenton.

However, it’s not nearly as simple as it seems. Both games were rescheduled. Post 218 will play at New Haven Post 366 Tuesday at 7 p.m. and at Union Post 297 Tuesday, July 12, at 5:30 p.m.

“All of a sudden having two rainouts makes our schedule a little tougher, but we always have the attitude that we will play anyone anywhere at any time,” Post 218 Manager Mike Gardner said. “We expect and hope to see everyone’s best pitcher as we know it will make us better.”

Washington has to shoehorn the games around its annual trip to the Blue Springs Wood Bat Tournament.

The New Haven game is set for the day before Washington starts play in the Kansas City suburbs. Post 218 opens the Blue Springs event against Jefferson City Post 5, a potential zone opponent, Thursday at 4 p.m.

“Our top pitchers are as good as we have seen and our pitching staff is very deep, so we should get quality pitching the next week in some important district games and at the Fike Wood Bat Tournament,” Gardner said. “It will help to prepare us for the District Tournament and hopefully through state and beyond.”

New Haven completes its district schedule in the game against Washington and can be seeded as high as third if it can beat Washington.

The game originally was set for June 30, but was called off due to poor field conditions in New Haven.

New Haven has not played since June 29 and will have its entire roster available since its younger teams both were knocked out prior to the start of district tournament action.

Post 218 last played Friday night at home against St. Peters. Ryan Lohrer threw seven innings in that game while Zach Marquart threw 1.2 innings and Nate Hillermann got the final out.

Post 218 likely will be trying to save some pitching for the Blue Springs event. Washington was the runner-up there last season.

The final game will be the day before the district tournament starts, Tuesday, July 12, two days after the finish of the Blue Springs Wood Bat Tournament.

Washington will play Union Post 297 at Wildcat Ballpark in a 5:30 p.m. game to close the regular season. The game originally was scheduled

Union needs a win to have a chance at making the Ninth District Tournament. Heading into this week, Post 297 was a half-game behind Warrenton and Pacific in a quest for a playoff spot. Sullivan Post 18, St. Peters Post 313 and West already have been eliminated from postseason consideration.

The Washington-Union game had been set for last Saturday, but was washed out by heavy rain which also postponed the Union-Pacific Junior Legion game, critical for seeding the district tournament.

Union, which led 6-0 in the bottom of the second, could move up to seventh in the final standings with a win. Pacific has been eliminated from the postseason.
