It was a tough day in the field for the Wright City baseball team. The Wildcats came off a long Easter break and committed six fielding errors in the 10-3 loss against Owensville Tuesday. The loss drops the Wildcats to 4-8 on the season.Owensville started things off offensively in the top of the second inning when senior Dawson Clark ripped a double to left center. Two straight walks loaded the bases for senior Marc Wilka. His ground ball scored Clark.Junior Grant Steever’s grounder to third base was bobbled, and another run scored to make the game 2-0.Wright City Head Coach Jeff Sargent said the Wildcats just weren’t dialed in during the game.“It’s one of those things where we had a long Easter break and you just never know how 14-, 15-, and 16-year-olds are going to do with a break like that,” Sargent said.Another Wright City fielding error put senior Logan Decker on base to start the top of the third for Owensville and he scored when Zach Finley singled to the gap in right center. The junior had a pair of hits and an RBI on the day for Owensville. The Wildcat offense finally showed signs of life in the bottom of the third inning.Freshman Hunter Brouk started the inning with a lead-off single to right center. Blain Tuepker then laced a double down the third base line to score Brouk. Sophomore Ian Hickman drew a walk and later scored when senior Tanner Riley doubled to the gap in right center. Riley’s hit also scored Tuepker and tied the game at 3-3.That was almost all the offense the Wildcats could muster. Owensville pitcher Austin Mayberry allowed just five hits on the day. The senior walked two and struck out three.Sargent said the Wildcats did not step up when opportunities to score came up“It’s seems like we can’t put a full game together sometimes,” Sargent said. “The only time it seems this team wants to play a full game is when Michael Holmes is pitching. As soon as he’s off the mound we can’t put things together, so I’m hoping to find some seniors that are going to step up and do some things.”After the Dutchmen pushed across two more runs in the top of the fourth, Wright City tried to get something going in the bottom half of the inning when Brouk drew a two-out walk.He stole second on a passed ball but a fly out to the infield ended the inning and the threat. While the Wildcats couldn’t capitalize on opportunities, Owensville did – and often. In the top of the fifth inning an error put a runner on board for the Dutchmen. He scored on a base hit by Brad Sexton. Sexton scored on a single by Wilka to make the score 7-3. Wilka had three hits in the game.“Everything we do is a mental error at this point. Sometimes I think the kids just need to grow up and get tougher. That’s really what it boils down to,” Sargent said.Wright City handled its pitching duties by committee, but Chase Holmes took the loss in the game. The junior allowed two hits and walked two in two innings of work. Senior Justin Bote started the game for the Wildcats, tossing two innings. He allowed two hits and struck out three. The Wildcats travel to Montgomery City Friday..DELIVERING STRIKES — Michael Holmes delivers a pitch Thursday against Silex.
