Three doubles in a row from the bottom of the Warrenton VFW Post 2180 Seniors lineup opened up the eighth inning Monday night and led the group to a 9-7 win over O’Fallon in its final game of the season.
But the fireworks began an inning earlier, when catcher Jacob Dively deposited a fastball behind the Wright City left field fence.
“It felt amazing. I just got glasses today and they seemed to work,” Dively said. “I didn’t even know the ball hit the bat, honestly. I saw it flying through the air, I rounded first and I heard the first base coach say, ‘Touch them all,’ and I had no clue. There’s no better feeling in the world. I sent my little brother out there to look for it, but he couldn’t find it. So I’m going to come back tomorrow and look for it.”
It was Dively’s first career home run, and it cut O’Fallon’s lead to 7-5.
Alex Vogt led off the next inning with a double, which started the rally that eventually gave Warrenton the lead.
Vogt finished the night 4-for-4.
“I’ve been iffy all season with weak pop flies or ground balls, but it finally came together tonight,” he said. “I was hitting the ball hard and it was a good way to end the season.”
Vogt had a little extra motivation coming into the night.
Warrenton High School teammate Trent McGee started for O’Fallon, and Vogt had some words of advice before the game.
“I told Trent before the game that he better pitch good, because I feel like hitting today, and he did that,” Vogt said with a grin. “It was a fun night.
O’Fallon took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first and extended its lead to 3-0 in the second, but Warrenton starting pitcher Cameron Swaringen settled down and kept Warrenton close through the fifth.
“They were phenomenal,” Dively said of Warrenton’s pitching staff. “Cam pitched a heck of a game, then Murph (Brendan Murphy) came in a pitched great, then Ian (McClellan) came in and shut them down. They didn’t know what to do.”
O’Fallon used a wild pitch and error in the top of the seventh to tack on four runs, which gave Vogt a familiar feeling.
“We’re always in these games but we always have that one bad inning,” he said. “I told the umpire that I hope it doesn’t happen again. We went down in the seventh and I didn’t know how we were going to respond, but we responded in a good way.”
Swaringen helped his cause with a double in the fourth inning.
Dively and teammate John Shaw each finished with three hits, and eight different Warrenton Seniors collected at least one hit.
