At last, the Warrenton Warriors are district champions. After losing to Hannibal for the past three years in the post season, the Warriors broke through and ended their tirade after a 42-28 win tonight. The win has cemented Warrenton’s spot in the Class 4 State Championships.

In the first quarter, the Warriors came out strong and quickly scored off their second drive of the night after Brandon Johnson carried the ball up the field 23-yards.

Hannibal responded in the next play and scored a touchdown to tie the game 7-7. With two minutes left in the first quarter, Austin Haas caught a 24-yard pass from Johnson and ran into the endzone. Late in the first, Kadin Stroer recorded a quarterback sack.

In the second quarter, Haas ran for a 10-yard touchdown and Hannibal scored on a three-yard rush. The Warriors led 20-14 going into halftime.

Haas continued with his offensive prowess and scored another touchdown, this time for 27-yards. The Warriors added on a two-point conversion as well after Johnson threw the ball to Peyton Dawson.

Two minutes later, the Pirates scored off a 40-yard run. The Warriors still led 28-21.

The Johnson and Haas duo did not stop there, and Haas scored his fourth touchdown of the night after catching a 65-yard pass from Johnson.

Javon Jones also recorded a sack for the Warriors late in the third quarter.

In the fourth quarter and to tie his career-high of touchdowns scored in a game, Haas scored his fifth touchdown on a 23-yard run.

Quickly after, the Pirates scored a touchdown from kickoff. Then, they recovered the ball from an onside kick to start at Warrenton’s 47-yard line. Despite having the momentum after recovering the ball, Austin White and the defense stopped the Pirates’ offense multiple times, which led to a turnover on downs and thwarted the Pirates’ hopes of a comeback.

The Warriors stopped history from rewriting itself and put an end to Hannibal’s four-year reign as district champions. Warrenton will head to the state tournament for the first time since 2010. They will face off against West Plains on Nov. 23.
