Scenic Regional Library in Warrenton will be spending the better part of a week later this month celebrating the 80th anniversary of one of the biggest blockbusters of all time, “Gone With the Wind.”The film came out in 1939. It was based on the 1936 novel by Margaret Mitchell and set during the Civil War and Reconstruction. The movie starred Vivien Leigh as Scarlett O’Hara, a plantation owner’s pampered daughter who is hardened after the war. Clark Gable plays Rhett Butler.The film won six Academy Awards and was nominated for three more. It’s remembered as one of the best movies of its time and is still a favorite on classic movie lists.For the book, Mitchell received the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1937 and the National Book Award for Most Distinguished Novel of 1936. Kerry Christian, adult programmer, Scenic Regional Library Warrenton Branch, said people have shown a lot of interest since the library started promoting the series of events.“They’re remembering the first time they saw it, who they saw it with,” Christian said.The upcoming activities will give book and movie fans more to opportunities to reminisce. “Gone With the Wind” will be celebrated with at the library during June 25-29 with displays, speakers and films.• On Tuesday, June 25, 10 recreations of Walter Plunkett-designed costumes from the movie will be on display. Nikki Luebke, Warrenton, will discuss the costumes starting at 6 p.m.• On Wednesday, June 26, the library will show “A Burning Passion: The Margaret Mitchell Story” starting at 6 p.m. The movie is about the author’s life.• On Thursday, June 27, The library will host Gone With the Wind Tea and Trivia starting at 6 p.m. Christian said visitors are welcome to wear costumes.• On Saturday, June 29, the week culminates with guest speakers on three topics. “The Making of a Masterpiece,” a documentary about the making of the movie by St. Louis area author Sally Tippett Rains, will be played at 12:30 p.m. At 1 p.m. special guest Anna Blair will talk about how the film was cast. Blair is an actor and “Gone With the Wind” memorabilia collector and enthusiast.
