Police are investigating a crime that took place at Warrenton High School last week.Assistant Superintendent Dr. Jill Schowe said high school administrators contacted the school district's central office on Wednesday morning, July 12, to inform them of an apparent break-in.Camera footage was used to identify two suspects, capturing video of them throughout the building for a period of about two hours. The suspects damaged and stole property, including iPads, computer monitors and digital video cameras.“We’re still coming across items that are missing, because some of our teachers aren’t in the buildings during the summer time,” said Assistant Superintendent Dr. Aaron Jones, who estimated the damage to be between $5,000 to $8,000. “That number could still fluctuate, though.”The district has filed a claim with its insurance provider, Gallagher Insurance Company, to replace the stolen or damaged items. Schowe said some of the equipment will need to be replaced before the start of the 2017-2018 school year on Aug. 17.It is not certain how the suspects entered the building. Administrators said it is possible they entered through a door on the west side of the building as well as a second story window.Administrators said police have located and taken a statement from at least one of the suspects. They expect to find out more about how the suspects gained access to the building once police take a statement from the second suspect.Jones said the security cameras were incredibly helpful in determining the actions taken by the criminals while in the building.“We had a pretty good determination of how long they were in there and everywhere they went,” said Jones. “We had footage of most of the damage that was done while they were doing it.”Once inside the building, the suspects had easy access to each of the classrooms, as the doors were left open due to current construction and HVAC upgrades taking place.Student Resource Officer Kevin Swofford said the Warrenton Police Department will not be able to issue any further information until the investigation is complete.Crime
