Record Staff WriterAn organization founded four years ago continues to support improving literacy for local children. The Warren County Bookcase Project held its fourth annual awards ceremony Sunday, April 12, at Warrior Ridge Elementary School in Warrenton.Rich Lagemann, the man who created the program, spoke to the assembled families and students, calling out the name of each of this year’s recipients. You can see the complete photo gallery here: http://bit.ly/1FS9gYH.The group has given away 303 hand-crafted bookcases over the past four years. This year accounts for 78 of those. “It’s a few less than last year, but we’re proud of it,” said Lagemann. The students who received the bookcases are participants in Youth in Need’s Head Start program. Each of the bookcases comes with a nameplate with the child’s name engraved on it and, on the back, a hand-written message from the sponsor who made the donation possible. At this year’s ceremony, Larry and Shari DeGraaf were honored for their generosity. Over the past three years they have donated 32 bookcases to increase literacy in the lives of Warren County children.“We moved out here a few years ago, and a friend told us about this program,” said Shari DeGraaf. The bookcases also come with a bag of books donated by area residents. They are organized and bagged by Daniel Boone Retired Teachers Association.“We give them 20-25 books to start them off,” says Lagemann. Tiffany Lloyd and her son, one of this year’s recipients, say the bookcase will help their family immensely.“We have one at home with some books, but it’s falling apart.” Her son loves Winnie the Pooh and could be seen flipping through one of the books he received during the ceremony. To donate online, visit warrencountybookcaseproject.org.
