Augusta Bottom Road in southern Warren County just became safer.Warren County Presiding Commissioner Roger Mauzy said Tuesday workers have finished the project to install guardrails and upgrade the gravel roadway.Mauzy gave a report to members of the Washington Area Highway Transportation Committee at their monthly meeting. The cost of the guardrail improvements is being shared by local governments — Warren and St. Charles counties, the city of Washington and Augusta township — with the four entities providing $80,000.Under the agreement, Warren County was required to repair the portion of the road known as the parkway and maintain it to where it is similar to the rest of the roadway that lies in the county.Guardrails were recommended as part of a road safety audit conducted in 2011.The agreement is in response to a wrongful death lawsuit filed by the parents of 16-year-old Ella Neier of Washington who was killed when her car ran off the Augusta Parkway and crashed into one of the lakes that border that section of the road. That suit was settled Aug. 31, 2015.The guardrails were installed to keep cars from leaving the road and entering the lakes.“I’m happy to announce the project is completed,” Mauzy told committee members Tuesday. He said potholes have been repaired and the guardrails are up.While the road is being used, it is not officially open.Mauzy said he wants to officially open the road at a ribbon cutting “soon.” He said when the date is decided invitations will be sent to area officials.“I thank you so much for your cooperation,” Mauzy told the committee. The commissioner said it was suggested that the speed limit be dropped from 30 to 25 mph, which would give deputies “more teeth” in controlling speeding. He added, however, that typically only one deputy is assigned to patrol the south end of the county and he can’t just shoot radar on the bottom road.Augusta Bottom Road is located in southeastern Warren County and southwestern St. Charles County. It is primarily used by motorists traveling to and from St. Charles County and Washington. The portion of the road in Warren County is gravel, while the St. Charles County section is paved with asphalt.

Although officially closed, local motorists are already traveling down the recently refurbished Augusta Bottom Road. Jimmy Potts photo.
