Madelyn Marschel has seen success in both track and cross country in her first three years at Warrenton High School.
The senior qualified for the state cross country and track meets this past season. She has competed in the state cross country meet her previous three years at Warrenton High School. She competed in the state track and field meet her sophomore and junior years.
Marschel and the rest of the Warrenton cross country athletes are set to begin their season Aug. 27 at the Fort Zumwalt North Invitational.
When did you start running competitively?
I started in middle school. My mom and my aunt were runners at Warrenton and I decided to do that as well because they did it. I thought it was interesting. I’ve been just running ever since.
Do you prefer cross country or track?
I like both. I like that cross country is smaller and you can kind of bond with the team more. But I also like track with the competitiveness and everything. I also like the shorter distances.
Is running both cross country and track beneficial for each sport?
I feel like running the distance in cross country does help with track because it carries through the winter in preparing for track. And I feel like most of the cross country runners are prepared for track with running.
What have been the keys to improving since your freshman year?
There’s been improvement. Especially this year with track, I made it in an open event with the 800 (meters). And last year I didn’t think there was going to be any way that I would make it. And so that helped. And then this year for cross country, we did a cross country camp and we actually just got back from that this past week and we ran 14 miles straight.
Do you have any specific goals for the upcoming cross country season?
This summer, our coach wants us to try and hit the 200 miles to prepare us for the season. And I’m already close to that. I’m 70 miles ahead of where I was last year. So I hope that will play into this year in taking me to state again but we’ll see.
What have you taken from your previous state meet experiences in both cross country and track and has it gotten easier each year you’ve competed?
I think just knowing how it’s going to be at state helps me because this year with like Wyatt (Claiborne) going for the first time, I was able to help him in knowing what it’s going to be like mentally and everything because there’s a lot of people.
What is your ideal vacation spot and why?
I love the warm weather so I would really like to go to Hawaii just by the beach.
What is your favorite subject in school?
Science. I would like to go into the medical field so Biology has always stood out to me.
What is your favorite food?
Pasta
