Athlete of the Month: Jeremiah Davis

In his first season as a member of the Wright City track and field team, Jeremiah Davis is already seeing success on the track.

Davis won both the 100-meter dash and 200-meter dash events at the EMO conference meet earlier this month. Davis also won the 4x200-meter relay race at the conference meet with teammates Devin Myers, Demetrice Le Noir and Jacob Smith.

Davis and the rest of the Wright City track and field athletes competed last weekend at the Class 3, District 3 meet at Wright City High School. Davis was a part of three relay teams that qualified for the sectional meet. The 4x200-meter relay team placed first in the district meet.

Davis participated in track in middle school but did not participate in track prior to this season.

How long have you been participating in track?

My freshman year track got canceled because of COVID. My sophomore year, I was more focused on school. This is my first actual year of track.

Have you liked being a member of the track team?

Yeah. I’ve been doing it since middle school so I do like track. I really like track. I like running against other people that are fast. I like the competition in general.

What was it like to win three events at the conference meet?

It felt the same honestly. There weren’t any new schools there. It was fun though. Got to meet a lot of new people.

Are the shorter races always the ones you compete in?

I am not a distance runner. I can do 400 (meters). That’s one time around the track. That’s about all I can do.

How important in track is getting a good start?

Getting a good start is the most important thing. My start at the beginning of the season was absolutely terrible. I would lag as soon as the gun went off. If you get a good start, that sets you up for the entire race. Like your start makes or breaks you pretty much.

Do you need to get experience in meets to master the start of races?

You can practice your start but you’re not getting the experience from practice. You need to do it in a meet to actually get it down and understand the gun timing.

Does it take time to get used to running a relay?

Doing the baton exchanges and getting the timing down is actually I’d say more important than the start because if you don’t get your timing down and you’re not running at the right time and handing off at the right time, you’re going to be behind. You don’t want to be behind. You want to set your teammate up so you can stay in the race and win.

How have you improved the most over the season?

I think my starts are definitely what I’ve improved the most and working on handoffs.
