By Janine DavisRecord Staff WriterFollowing one of the worst snowstorms in years, students at area schools are back in the classroom after an extended break.“As of Friday (Jan. 10) we will have had seven snow days,” Warren County R-III Superintendent Dr. Jim Chandler reported to the school board during its monthly meeting.“For us, the most important thing is the safety of our kids and our staff,” Chandler said. “We don’t want to put anybody in danger with the cold weather or slick roads, so we’re cautious about that.”Chandler said the district has scheduled its makeup days to conform to state guidelines that require school districts in Missouri to make up their first six canceled days and make up every other day starting at day seven until a maximum total of 10 makeup days is reached.Based on the state statute, the last day school could be in session is May 30 instead of the original enddate of May 22.Makeup days for R-III are scheduled for Jan. 20, Feb. 17, April 21, May 21-23 and May 27.“It is early January, so we could have more snow, but even with more snow days possible, the maximum days the district would have to make up is 10,” said Chandler.Wright City R-II is in a similar situation, having missed about the same number of snow days. To date, the district has scheduled Jan. 20, Feb. 17 and April 21 as snow makeup days.Missouri’s law states: “There are two circumstances under which a legal school term may include fewer than 174 days and 1,044 hours: the inclement weather forgiveness rule; and the inclement weather makeup days rule. Both are intended to provide relief in the event of weather conditions which pose a threat to the safety and welfare of students including: (1) excessively cold temperatures; (2) snow and ice storms; and (3) under some conditions, excessively heavy rain.”School leaders noted that since the last meeting a month ago, R-III students had been in class only 5 1/2 days due to the Christmas holiday break and weather.Area schools schedule makeup days
