Former R-II student Dr. Amy Salvo reflects on first semester as superintendent

Posted

Since the hiring of Wright City R-II Superintendent Dr. Amy Salvo, she has stressed the importance of meeting the needs of every student within the district and celebrating these students every day.

Salvo was a 1998 Wright City graduate and made her return to the district on July 1, 2024.

Through the district’s culture of “Every Student, Every Day,” Salvo has incorporated “Superintendent Advisory Groups” with students and “Superintendent Chats” with teachers.

During these discussions, Salvo has noted topics discussed have ranged from learning, student well-being, future goals and student environment and experience.

Salvo noted the goal of these conversations “is to foster a collaborative approach to enhance educational experiences and the work environment for all stakeholders.”

She added that this has allowed her to connect with students and staff ranging from Pre-K to 12th grade on a more personal level. During these chats, she listens to their insights and barriers they may be facing, which in turn creates an understanding of how to create the “best possible environment for both students and staff.”

“Each group of students had their own unique heartwarming attribute that left an impression on my heart and love for my purpose in education,” Salvo said.

By incorporating “Every Student, Every Day,” the district has made efforts to show “it’s not just a slogan but a guiding principle,” by branding the logo through media, posters, t-shirts and more.

Salvo also noted the district has reinforced their commitment through staff meetings that often focus on how they can meet the needs of every student individually, as well as celebrating any and all accomplishments.

On top of the district’s shared purpose, Salvo noted that overall, serving her alma mater has been a “rewarding experience.”

She added that seeing the dedication of the entire community has been a highlight so far in her tenure, specifically naming the Blue and Gold Scholarship Auction.

“This event reflects our community’s deep commitment to investing in the education and future of our graduates, and it’s inspiring to see such generosity and support in action,” Salvo said.

Salvo also mentioned that creating snow day announcement videos has been a memorable experience.

As Wright City gears up for the remainder of the school year, Salvo is excited to continue her outreach efforts with students and staff.

“These opportunities to meet directly with students and staff are invaluable for fostering collaboration, gathering diverse perspectives and ensuring our efforts remain aligned with their needs,” Salvo said.
