Wright City unable to hold lead in loss to Montgomery County

Wright City held a late second quarter lead but ultimately fell to Montgomery County last week.
Wright City (4-2) dropped a road conference game to Montgomery County (1-5). The Wildcats lost the game 36-14.
After Montgomery County opened the first half scoring with a touchdown in the second quarter to take an 8-0 lead, Wright City responded with a pair of touchdowns. Duan McRoberts scored both touchdowns. Quarterback Joey Gendron connected with McRoberts for an 11-yard touchdown to trim the Montgomery County lead to 8-7. McRoberts scored on a 1-yard touchdown run with under a minute left in the half.
Montgomery County was able to score a touchdown prior to halftime to tie the game.
“Unfortunately, they threw the ball really well that last minute and were able to march the ball down the field and score right at halftime to tie it up,” Wright City football coach Tyler Rickard said.
Montgomery County outscored Wright City 22-0 in the second half.
“Second half, we just didn’t execute offensively like we needed to to maintain drives...Defensively, they beat us at our own game honestly. They ran bubbles and screens and complimented it with a little inside run. A little jet sweep and things like that. We just couldn’t quite contain it,” Rickard said.
Joey Gendron went 17-30 passing for 120 yards. He threw one touchdown. McRoberts led Wright City with 87 yards rushing on 10 carries. Nate Womack led the Wildcats with 68 yards receiving on six catches. Carleon Jones also hauled in six passes for 56 yards.
Jones led the Wildcat defense with seven tackles. Womack and Devin Myers each had five tackles. Clayton Epperson led the Wildcat defense with two tackles for loss.
The loss snapped Wright City’s four-game winning streak. Rickard thinks the Wildcats’ focus all year of going 1-0 each week will help turn the page from the loss. They will host North Callaway (4-2) this week.
“We’ve got to think of each week as just another opportunity,” Rickard said. “It’s a week in and of itself. We let the previous week guide us but we don’t let it derail us or provide too much confidence.”
Rickard thinks Wright City’s strong senior leadership will help the Wildcats move forward this week. While Wright City will have a gameplan specifically tailored for the matchup with the Thunderbirds, their top priority is fixing the mistakes they made last week.
“We’ve got to start with ourselves and we’ve got to clean up things that we did wrong on Friday,” Rickard said. “And then make our adjustments that we need to based on the gameplan we’ve got installed. Don’t need to overthink it. The season’s not over. Everything we want to do is right in front of us. We don’t want to ignore the loss but we can’t dwell on it.”
Wright City’s matchup with North Callaway is slated to begin at 7 p.m. Friday.
