Wright City girls fall at Clopton; And other area sports

The Wright City girls basketball team suffered two losses in both of its games at last week’s Clopton Tournament. 

The seventh-seeded Wildcats fell to the host school 59-27 on Monday and lost 46-25 to No. 3 Mark Twain on Wednesday. 

In the Mark Twain contest, Wright City received 13 points from Jasmin Simpson. The Wildcats trailed 25-16 at halftime. Daetyn Gurley chipped in with eight points.

In the tournament opener, Simpson led the way again with 12 points as the Wildcats fell behind 20-2 in the opening quarter and 36-15 at intermission.

Liberty Christian girls fall in title game

A long week came to an end with the Bourbon Tournament championship eluding the Liberty Christian girls basketball team. 

The Eagles held a seven-point advantage entering the final quarter, but were outscored 27-16 by Belle in a 57-53 setback Saturday.

Adison Roden led the way with 26 points and 12 rebounds. Alli Meyer also reached double figures with 11 points. 

Earlier in the tournament, Liberty Christian opened with a 57-23 win over Bourbon on Tuesday and a 51-45 triumph against St. Paul Lutheran on Thursday. 

In the Bourbon contest, the Eagles jumped out to a 36-13 halftime lead. Gracie Foran and Meyer led with 17 and 13 points, respectively. 

Two nights later, Roden had a team-high 25 points and Sophi Mueller added 16. The Eagled led 30-19 at halftime.

GIRLS WRESTLING

Two medal at home tourney

Two Wright City girls wrestlers claimed medals in the school’s first home tournament Saturday.

Samantha Byerley and Elizabeth Riggs both placed second at 117 and 127 pounds, respectively. 

Byerley won two of her four matches in the tourney, capping the day with a pinfall over Sullivan’s Cassandra Pritchett.

Riggs, meanwhile, split her two matches in the tourney. She won her opening match by pinfall and was pinned in the title match by Fulton’s Rylee Caswell.

BOYS WRESTLING

Horneker leads Wildcats at Marshall

Kyle Horneker had a second-place finish to lead Wright City at Saturday’s Marshall Tournament. 

Horneker won three of his four matches, two of those by pinfall, at 220 pounds. The Wildcats had two wrestlers, Kaylob Stufflebean and Riley Shive, who each won two matches and placed third at 160 and 285 pounds, respectively.
