The Wright City Lady Wildcats earned their first district tournament win in four years with a 15-0 win over STEAM Academy last week.

Wright City (12-15) earned a three inning mercy rule win over STEAM Academy in the Class 3, District 3 quarterfinals last week.

“We didn’t know what to expect because we have no common opponents with them… We swung at strikes and did what we were supposed to do,” Wright City head coach Fred Russ said.

Wright City scored seven runs in the first inning. Sophia Wegrzyn got the scoring started for the Lady Wildcats with a bases loaded double to score Paige Rees, Lydia Clubb and Emma Staats, who drew walks to start the game. Wright City scored four more runs in the inning. They walked seven times in the inning.

The Lady Wildcats added six runs in the second inning and two runs in the third inning to secure the mercy rule win.

“I was talking to a couple other coaches, she (STEAM’s pitcher) throws strikes,” Ross said. “Today, she couldn’t throw strikes. Maybe the wind had something to do with it because she doesn’t throw particularly hard. So it may have been moving the ball a little bit on her.”

Wright City dropped their district semifinal game to Palmyra 24-10.

Rees, Staats and Wegrzyn led Wright City with three hits. Staats logged a home run and double. Rees and Wegrzyn registered one extra base hit. Staats led the Lady Wildcats with four RBIs. Rees and Staats each scored three runs.
