Warriors win four duals at GAC North Scramble

The Warrenton Warriors notched 18 individual match wins and four dual wins at the GAC North Scramble Tuesday night.

Warrenton went 4-1 in team duals Tuesday night against their five conference foes. Warrenton beat Orchard Farm, St. Charles, St. Charles West and Winfield. Warrenton lost to North Point 48-32, despite winning six of eight contested matches in the dual meet.

“The one dual that we lost, with the guys we had, we probably weren’t going to win,” Warrenton boys wrestling coach Clayton Olsson said. We just had too many forfeits. But as far as the matches we actually got to wrestle, they competed well. They fought hard. They put it all out there and overall, I’m pretty happy with the way they wrestled tonight.”

Jeremiah Kassing, Manny McCauley, David McCauley and Jacob Ruff each went 3-0 in the duals. Kassing and Manny McCauley each earned wins over North Point, Orchard Farm and St. Charles. Kassing completed his perfect day with a take down of Liam Borgsmiller of Orchard Farm in overtime to earn a 4-2 sudden victory. Ruff earned wins in duals against North Point, St. Charles and St. Charles West. He won all three matches by fall. David McCauley earned wins over North Point, St. Charles West and Winfield.

Anthony Lombardo and Noah Lohrmann each won a pair of matches on the day. Lombardo went 2-0, with wins over North Point and St. Charles. Lohrmann went 2-1. He earned wins in duals against Orchard Farm and St. Charles.

“It’s a good final match because it has significance,” Olsson said. “It has importance being conference matches. So it kind of gives them that you’re not just wrestling a match, you’re wrestling some with importance like you will be at districts.”

The Warriors are next scheduled to compete at the Class 3, District 2 tournament Feb. 17-18 at Ft. Zumwalt South High School. Jeremiah Kassing, Joshua Kassing, Lohrmann and Ruff all competed at districts last season and qualified for the state tournament. The Warriors also will have several wrestlers who will compete in their first district tournament.

“When you’re more experienced, you know what to expect.,” Olsson said. “You get less nervous. But most of the time, districts isn’t bad because it’s held in another school. Just like every other tournament is. They’re used to that. It’s usually when they get to state when it’s in a big arena and there’s a lot of people. That’s when the nerves start to kick in.”

Olsson said the Warriors will spend the time between Tuesday night’s matches and the district tournament preparing for the district competition. The wrestling room will be smaller the next couple weeks, with only the varsity boys and girls wrestlers in the wrestling room as they prepare for postseason competition.

“We’ll watch some of their older matches and really nitpick the specific things for each one of them,” Olsson said. “This is what you need to work on. Or when you’re on top, this is what you need to work on. Maybe even watch some of their opponents. This is what he likes to do, let’s work on defending that. Different things like that. We can do a little bit more like that where we’re more specific and focused.”
