Warriors jump out to 10-2 start
The Warrenton baseball team is making opposing teams take notice in the first weeks of the spring season.
The Warriors have started the year with a 10-2 record and are undefeated in the GAC North through their first four games of the conference slate.
On Saturday, Warrenton pummeled county rival Wright City 17-5 before losing 22-7 to Fort Zumwalt East.
The win, Austin Haas led the way with a 3 for 4 performance at the plate with three runs and one RBI. Carter Martin went 2-3 with three runs and two RBIs. Others who had two hits included Troy Anderson, Ben Peth and Mason Thompson. The offensive outburst backed a strong performance from Jake Kirkpatrick on the mound who earned his first varsity win. He gave up only one earned run on two hits in three innings. He struck out four and walked one. Haas struck out two batters in an inning of work as well.
Against Zumwalt East, the Lions broke open a 12-7 game with 10 runs in the final frame.
The Warriors were led offensively by Tyler Oliver who hit a homer and had three RBIs. Haas and Thompson each contributed two hits in the loss.
In the conference games, Warrenton swept Orchard Farm in 12-2 and 5-3 victories. Last week, the Warriors knocked off Winfield 3-2 on consecutive days.
Warrenton was scheduled to face St.Charles on Tuesday and Wednesday. The Warriors will return home against St. Charles West at 4:15 p.m. on April 23.
