Warrenton World Ward II veteran to celebrate 103rd birthday

Posted

In Warren County and across the country next Wednesday, Nov. 11, ceremonies will be held in recognition of Veterans Day. Before that happens, however, one of the last living World War II veterans in the area will mark a less solemn occasion: Julius Jacquot is turning 103.

Today, Jacquot is a resident at Oak Pointe Assisted Living, where staff and family members will celebrate a few days before his actual birthday on Nov. 9.

Although he moved to Warrenton more than two decades ago, Jacquot grew up in East St. Louis, living through the Great Depression before being drafted into the Army in 1943.

Serving with the Coast Artillery Corps, 430th Antiaircraft Artillery Automatic Weapons Battalion, he participated in the Normandy campaign, arriving within days of D-Day. He was involved in many other famous episodes of the war as well, including the Battle of the Bulge.

Jacquot was awarded numerous decorations, including the Bronze Star for heroic achievement on April 6, 1945.

Jacquot volunteered that day to go with his Battery Commander on a foot patrol reconnaissance party across the Weser River, into enemy held territory. Despite intense enemy small arms fire, he continued to move forward, firing at the enemy from an exposed position, wounding many and aiding in taking many as prisoners.

As a result of this action, gun positions were immediately set up, providing the necessary protection to build a vital bridge. “The courage, skill and utter disregard for personal safety and devotion to duty displayed by Private First Class Jacquot, reflect great credit upon himself and the Military Service,” according to his Bronze Star citation.

Jacquot remains an active member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church and a lifelong St. Louis Cardinals fan. While his birthday party will not be open to the public, those who would like to wish him well are welcome to send cards to Oak Pointe Assisted Living, 700 Forrest Ave, Warrenton, MO 63383.
