The Warrenton boys basketball team won a pair of games at the Hy-Vee Arena Holiday Shootout in Kansas City to move two games over .500 for the first time this season.
Warrenton (7-5, 1-2 GAC North) opened the Hy-Vee Holiday Shootout with a convincing 49-17 win over Southeast.
“The first game against Southeast we were able to get out to a quick lead, giving us the opportunity to see all players on the roster get to see some minutes in the game,” Warrenton Head Coach Mark Thomas said.
They followed up that win with a 38-35 win over Truman. Thomas said the game was back and forth the entire game, with senior Troy Anderson beating the buzzer with 0.07 seconds remaining.
“I thought the team did a great job of listening and sticking to the game plan that we talked about and dictated the pace of the game,” Thomas said. “The Truman game was a great team win, with contributions from many in lots of the stats categories as well as intangibles like talking on defense, tagging cutters, and boxing out.”
With the two wins, Warrenton has gone 5-1 over their last six games after starting the season 2-4. They are slated to host Hermann Jan. 5.
“The trip ended 2023 on a positive note and we look forward to building off of it in 2024,” Thomas said.
