Warrenton, Wright City tie at golf meet

Warrenton and Wright City dueled to a tie at last week’s girls golf triangular.

The Lady Warriors and Lady Wildcats both finished with team scores of 228 at last week’s triangular competition at Innsbrook Golf Course.

Both Warrenton and Wright City beat Ft. Zumwalt East by 10 strokes. Warrenton’s win over Ft. Zumwalt East was a conference win.

“Our scores were a little bit higher than they have been, but we still pulled away with the conference win against East,” Warrenton girls golf coach Kelly Anderson said.

“This is our third win out of four conference matches. So for us, you know, the seniority that I talked about, the girls are a little more comfortable and they’re playing in a little more relaxed state for the most part. So it was good to get another win tonight against East.”

Wright City freshman Morgan Nute finished first among all competitors with a score of 41 during the nine holes. She finished 11 strokes ahead of Warrenton’s Jenna Marschel, who finished with the second best score in the competition.

“She (Nute) did what she usually does and she’s consistently at the same level every time,” Wright City girls golf coach Shannon Wells said.

Wright City’s other counting scores came from Rylee Schaefer and Kalin Hawn, who both finished the round with scores of 59, and Skylla Barfield, who shot a 69.

“I was really impressed with my two, three, fours,” Wells said. “They scored higher than what they’ve been doing in the other nine hole contests, which is good. I want to see growth out of them as we go along, you know, to, just to get ready for districts.”

Warrenton’s Sierra Foley shot a 55, which was fourth among all golfers at the competition. Haley Rausch shot a 60 and Merrick Owens shot a 61 to round out Warrenton’s counting scores.

Warrenton’s road conference win came after a 207-218 home conference win over North Point earlier in the week. Three of Warrenton’s early season matches were at their home golf course at Country Lakes Golf Course.

“I think it’s good for them,” Anderson said. “We played really well against North Point. We had some season lows for some of the girls. So to play three home matches and then to come to another course and still be able to come away with the win even though it isn’t our lowest score is good for them. I think they’ll walk away today happy with the outcome. But of course we always want to score a little bit lower than we did.”
