The Warrenton Lady Warriors scored the first 10 points of Friday night’s clash with Hermann in their convincing win over the Bearcats Friday night.
Warrenton (10-3, 4-0 GAC North) started Friday night’s home game on a 10-0 run in their 71-46 win over Hermann. Warrenton senior Sophi Mueller scored four of Warrenton’s 10 points during the run. Isabel Benke and Erin Klasing each knocked down a three point field goal to help Warrenton build a double digit lead.
“Our main goal was to start off hot. Pretty fast tempo,” Mueller said. “We wanted to come out pretty quick. I think we wanted to work as a team to build the scoreboard up. We came out quicker and eventually it helped us in the end.”
Warrenton took 11-point leads after the first quarter and at the halftime break. The Lady Warriors battled substantial foul trouble in the second quarter, with all five starters tallying at least two fouls in the first half. Nyasia Love and Klasing each picked up three fouls in the first half. Benke, Meuller and Nevaeh Hill each had two fouls in the first half.
Warrenton had 15 team fouls in the first half.
“That was our big focus for the second half is that we’ve got to get out of foul trouble,” Warrenton Head Coach Hannah Logan said. “And I just said, it really just came down to our hustle. We were beaten. So instead of hustling to get back in front, we just fouled, thought we could get out of it. So the big focus in the second half, as I had several with three fouls going into the second, was just to play smart defense, good defense and stay out of foul trouble.”
Despite the foul trouble, only one Warrenton player finished with more than three fouls.
After Hermann trimmed the Warrenton lead to nine points in the third quarter for the first time since the first quarter, Warrenton outscored Hermann 13-5 to close out the quarter to take a commanding 48-31 heading into the final quarter.
Warrenton post players Nevaeh Hill and Sophi Mueller combined for 29 points. Hill, who led the Lady Warriors with 17 points in the win, scored 15 points in the second half. Mueller also scored 12 points, including eight in the first quarter. Logan thought the Lady Warriors “dominated on the inside.” She noted their size advantage over Hermann.
“The players will come out and double team, triple team, the post,” Mueller said. “So post just have to learn to kick it out. And then our guards will finish on the threes and then they’ll get guarded and then it’s just back to the post and it’s kind of a game for everybody.”
Sophia Benke also reached double figures for the Lady Warriors. She finished with 10 points. Hill and Makayla Witthaus led Warrenton with 10 rebounds. Isabel Benke had four assists.
Warrenton cruised to a 61-33 win Monday over Miller Career in the first round of the Warrenton Tournament. Hill led Warrenton with 20 points and 12 rebounds. Mueller and Sophia Benke also reached double figures in points. Mueller scored 17 points and Benke added 14 points. Isabel Benke had three assists.
