Warrenton starts fast in GAC North win

Posted

The Warrenton Lady Warriors found scoring both in the post and on the perimeter in their convincing GAC North win over St. Charles Tuesday night.

Warrenton (3-1, 1-0 GAC North) got out to an early double digit lead they did not relinquish in their 70-43 conference win over St. Charles Tuesday night. Warrenton head coach Hannah Logan said Warrenton’s focus was to be a threat both in the post and from the outside.

“We just started off ready to go,” Logan said. “Our goal was we need to go inside and outside. After last night’s (Monday) Sullivan game, they played us hard on the inside. So it was the guard’s turn. They had to step up and knock some shots down. So they had to guard both. So going in tonight, I said let’s just start out from the get go be challenging to guard both the outside and the inside.”

Warrenton’s scoring early on came in the post, with senior Sophi Mueller scoring Warrenton’s first seven points. After Nyasia Love knocked down a three point field goal, Mueller scored on a two-point jumper to give Warrenton a double digit lead.

Warrenton freshman Sophia Benke subsequently scored six of her eight first quarter points on a pair of three point field goals to give the Lady Warriors an 18-2 lead. Nevaeh Hill scored the final four points of the quarter to give Warrenton a 29-8 lead heading into the second quarter.

The Lady Warriors further built on their lead to take a 40-13 lead into the halftime break. Benke, Love and Mueller all reached double figures in points in the first half.

“At halftime, I just said we have a good lead, but we have to keep building just like any game,” Logan said. “It’s a game of runs. I said they’re going to go on their runs. We’re going to go on our runs. We have to be able to stop them and keep ours going.”

With St. Charles not allowing many fast break opportunities, most of Warrenton’s scoring, especially in the first half, came in the half court offense. Logan said the Lady Warriors executed well in the half court offense.

“Our goal is always to look in the transition, but it really wasn’t there tonight,” Logan said. “So our focus was just to get control, settle it down, get us in our offense. At least try to get two reversals before we score. I said obviously, if you were wide open and you feel confident or if it’s a wide open lay up, then take it.”

Hill led Warrenton with 15 points. Love and Mueller each tallied 13 points. Benke had 10 points for the Lady Warriors. Nine Lady Warriors scored at last two points in the win.

Warrenton is slated to continue conference play with a road game against North Point Nov. 12.
