PREVIEW: Warrenton sets sights on conference title, district tourney success

Posted

Fresh off winning a GAC North conference title, the Warrenton Lady Warriors are looking to repeat as conference champions and advance further in the district tournament this season.

The Lady Warriors finished last season with a 17-10 record, including a perfect 10-0 record in conference games in Hannah Logan’s first season at the helm of the basketball program. The Lady Warriors fell to St. Dominic in the first round of the district tournament.

“I think as a team kind of the unspoken goal is that we obviously want to win conference again and go further in districts than we did last year,” Warrenton guard Isabel Benke said.

The Lady Warriors will be leaning on both their returning contributors and newcomers as they look towards those goals. Nevaeh Hill returns after leading Warrenton with over 12 points and over seven rebounds per game last season. Benke and Sophi Mueller averaged over six points per game last season. Erin Klasing also returns after leading Warrenton with 24 steals last season.

The Lady Warriors will have to overcome the loss of three of their top six scorers from last year’s team.

“I think us as a group, I think we’re gonna be a really good group to play with and to watch,” Warrenton senior Sophi Mueller said. “I think we as a team have a lot of roles we each need to play that all fit together. So I think we fit kind of perfectly.”

Logan conceded the Lady Warriors lost four seniors who they will miss this season but said the current players now have new roles to step into.

“I really think they have done a great job stepping into those roles … I think they just know my expectations and where I want them to be and where I think they can be as a player,” Logan said.

Logan stressed the benefits of having multiple starters and contributors back from last year’s team to help with the transition.

The Lady Warriors plan to play an up tempo style this season, both on offense and defense. Logan said it is her “big focus” to play faster on both ends of the court. She thinks the Lady Warriors were too slow getting the ball up the court last season. She also thinks they were too slow on defense.

“Everybody really understands the expectation of pushing the ball up the court and playing hard and up in everybody’s face on defense,” Benke said. “So I think we won’t have a problem with putting pressure on the other team.”

Warrenton will open the regular season with a road game against Troy Buchanan Nov. 21. The Lady Warriors’ first home game will be Nov. 28 against Silex.
