The Warrenton Warriors found the back of the net early and often in their win over Wright City earlier this week.
Warrenton scored four first half goals and the first six goals of the game in their 7-3 win over Wright City. With the win, Warrenton swept the season series against the Wildcats. Warrenton beat Wright City 4-0 earlier this season to win the Wright City Tournament.
“We just were really worrying about our team and coming out and playing and passing and doing what we’re supposed to,” Warrenton boys soccer coach John Schulte said. “That’s how we talked about before the game and at half is just play our style, move the ball, find the open guy, hit those corners, make those runs with speed. And, you know, we started doing that and then we started to really, get some shots on goal.”
Warrenton took the lead less than six minutes into the game on Bryan Guerrero’s first goal of the day. After neither team could find the back of the next for over 22 minutes, Warrenton scored three goals in less than six minutes to take a 4-0 lead into halftime. Nolan Donovan and Travis Corbett scored to give the Warriors a 3-0 lead. Guerrero scored his second goal of the day on a penalty kick.
Isaac Wagner and Evan Donovan each scored in a goal in the first 10 minutes of the second half to give Warrenton a 6-0 lead. Wagner scored a goal later in the half to put Warrenton up 7-2.
“They were doing all the things that we asked them to do there right at the end when we had a couple of goals,” Schulte said. “It was forward posting up or pointing to his feet, he’s flicking the ball off to the runner coming in and boom, scoring. So we did that two times with that exact kind of play. I tell them that’s the kind of stuff we’ve been working on. So it’s great to see them actually do it in a game.”
Wright City’s three goals in the second half all came from Nate Bowman. Bowman scored two goals in the middle of the second half to pull Wright City within four goals with under 18 minutes remaining. He scored his third goal with 34 seconds remaining to secure the hat trick.
“We didn’t execute,” Wright City boys soccer coach Josh Albregts said. “Plain and simple. We didn’t execute and that’s what happens. We came in with a gameplan and just nobody wanted to do it. That’s really all I have to say right now.”
Warrenton was scheduled to host St. Charles West Oct. 10. They will host St. Charles at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 12.
Wright City was scheduled to host Union Oct. 11.
