Warrenton runners compete at Gans Creek

The Warrenton cross country teams competed at the Gans Creek Classic last weekend.

The Warrenton boys cross country team placed 17th out of 34 teams in the blue division. The Warriors were led by Phillip Kackley, who ran the 5K race in 16:42 to place fifth. Head Coach Jeremy Collins said Kackley started 16th and moved up to fifth during the race. Fellow senior Wyatt Claiborne placed 35th in the competition. He finished the 5K in 17:43. Jacob Beckemeyer was the third Warrior runner to finish the race. He placed 134th with a time of 19:17. Matt Craven ran the race in 19:34 and placed 158th, while Noah Cline placed 164th with a time of 19:39.

Collins said based on virtual rankings for districts on MoMileSplit, the Warriors are ranked third in their district. The top four teams qualify for the state meet.

“As a team, they are going to be right there to possibly get a team qualifying spot,” Collins said. “With the district meet on Oct. 28th, we still have work to do.  Every place is going to be crucial.  They are really going to need to be working as a team and really encouraging each other as the season goes on.”

The Warrenton girls cross country squad also competed at Gans Creek. They placed 32nd out of 36 competing teams in the blue division. Alexis Ruff was the top runner for the Lady Warriors. She placed 123rd with a personal record time of 23:33.

“After the first kilometer, she was in 201st place,” Collins said. “So as the race went on, she moved up 78 spots. When you can move up that much in a race, it takes a lot of toughness to be able to do that.”

Camryn Petersmeyer and Briana Grooms both registered finishes in the top-200 among all competing runners in the blue division. Petersmeyer placed 157th with a time of 24:17. Grooms finished the race in 25:02 and placed 190th. Ashlynn Reeves and Jadyn Hopper both ran personal records.

“They all ran extremely tough and I really think in the next couple weeks some of the times are really going to start to drop,” Collins said. “With districts about four weeks away, we are hoping to get a couple runners to qualify for the state meet.”

Warrenton will host the Mike Spoede Invitational at 4 p.m. Friday.
