Warrenton came up one goal short in their upset bid attempt against Hannibal in the first round of the district tournament.
Warrenton fell to Hannibal 2-1 in the first round of the Class 3, District 4 tournament Monday. Hannibal led 1-0 at halftime and scored another goal in the second half just just over 17 minutes remaining to take a 2-0 lead.
Warrenton’s Gavin Thompson scored Warrenton’s lone goal with just under 11 minutes remaining off Bryan Guerrero’s free kick.
“We fought back, got the goal and pressured them there at the end,” Warrenton soccer coach John Schulte said. “We had a couple of other chances and just couldn’t get the ball in. So I’m proud of the kids for how hard they worked.”
After not creating many scoring chances in the first half, Warrenton was able to generate multiple scoring opportunities in the second half. Schulte said there were times in the first half where the Warriors were “a little bit anxious” and missed on their passes. He thought they did a better job of connecting with teammates on passes in the second half.
“I think our kids also came out with a little bit more fight,” Schulte said. “They knew that they could take this game and win it. They just had to play a little harder and they did that. They’ve done that kind of stuff all year where they responded and played tremendously hard.”
Warrenton’s narrow loss to Hannibal came a week after the Warriors lost to the Pirates 6-1 in the regular season.
“We knew it was going to be a good game,” Schulte said. “We gave up some bad goals that game and weren’t playing at our best. And we knew that we had a chance today to come out and upset them. And the kids did a fabulous job.”
Warrenton finishes the season with an 11-11 record. They finished the regular season with a winning record for the first time since the 2016 season, which was also the last time Warrenton reached double digit wins.
We’re made up of mainly sophomores,” Schulte said. “We have a couple of juniors thrown in, a couple of seniors thrown in, but the bulk of our kids are sophomores. So we’re pretty much a JV team and we’re playing phenomenal. So I can’t wait to see what happens in the future with these guys as they grow. Next year they’re going to get stronger. A little bit older, all that stuff, more knowledge. So we’re expecting even better things next year and the year after when they’re all going to be seniors.”
