Warrenton cruises to GAC North win

Posted

Eight two-out runs in the first inning pushed Warrenton to a GAC North win last week.

Warrenton (16-9-1, 8-2 GAC North) beat Orchard Farm 10-0 in five innings in their regular season finale.

After pitcher Kylie Witthaus held Orchard Farm scoreless in the top of the first inning, Warrenton scored eight runs in the bottom of the first inning. All eight runs were scored with two outs.

“We came out the gate strong today,” Warrenton softball coach Chad Berrey said. “Put up eight runs and then that kind of eases the rest of the game and the pitching so we can have fun and then I can get all the girls into the game and we can really start rolling.”

After Warrenton took a 1-0 lead on Makayla Witthaus’ RBI single, Maddisyn Hoelscher hit a two-run home run to give Warrenton a 3-0 lead.

“This was a perfect day that she hit it hard,” Berrey said. “She didn’t really need the wind today. But she put a good piece on it, line drive home run. And I mean, that’s a huge thing to celebrate your senior year on the last home game and, and you put one out. It’s pretty cool.”

Warrenton added a pair of runs in the fourth inning to take a 10–0 lead. Kiera Daniel hit a single to score two runs in the inning.

Kylie Witthaus struck out the side in order in the fifth inning to trigger the mercy rule win for Warrenton. She struck out 12 Orchard Farm batters.

Warriors get three seed in district tournament

Coming off a fourth place state finish last season, Warrenton will open their district tournament this week as the No. 3 seed.

Warrenton opens the Class 4, District 5 tournament with a matchup against No. 6 district seed Marshall. The matchup will be played at 7 p.m. Oct. 12 at Jefferson City High School.

Berrey said the district is “probably the toughest district we’ve been in since my tenure here as a head coach.”

“It’s gonna be tough,” Berrey said. “But we like how our bats are. Our bats are rocking right now. The girls are swinging with confidence one through nine. Everyone’s turned it on. Kylie is being Kylie on the mound. Defense is sharp, minimize the errors. I think we’re firing all cylinders and we’ve stuck to that playing the best ball by October.”
