The Warrenton Lady Warriors earned a three set win over Wright City last week.
Warrenton beat Wright City 25-15, 25-21, 25-18 in last week’s Warren County clash. The Lady Warriors won 16 of the first 20 points in their first set win.
“I did like how the team came out,” Warrenton volleyball coach Kayla Nelson said. “I know it’s a rivalry. And it’s fun every year. I participated in it when I was in school and then came back and it’s still fun. They’re always close games. It just makes for a tense but exciting environment. So I know all the girls enjoy it.”
After Warrenton jumped out to an early 9-3 lead in the second set, Wright City won 12 of the next 15 points to take a 15-13 lead in the set and force Warrenton to call a timeout.
“We changed a few of our defense positions and a few of our players switched positions from defense to offense,” Wright City volleyball coach Christine Goldsmith said. “So I thought that helped putting the best person in the best spot at the best time to give us more passes.”
Wright City led 18-17 in the second set before Warrenton outscored Wright City 7-4 to close out the second set. Warrenton’s last three points came on Chandler Blondin’s serve.
“I think that second set we kind of lost the energy and we were getting bored,” Nelson said. “So that’s when I had to tell them like, hey, we need to pick it up. We’re still playing out here. So they did and again, back and forth, but they came out on top. So, I was happy.”
Wright City led multiple times early in the third set and held a 7-6 lead before Warrenton outscored Wright City 19-11 down the stretch to win the match.
“It always helps winning those first two and just getting it getting done,” Nelson said. “It has been a rough season. We haven’t felt, you know, that win that much. So I think when they do feel that it is really exciting for them and it really does drive the momentum.”
