Both Truesdale and Wright City police chiefs said their departments had a successful Shop With A Cop program earlier this month.
It even included a nice surprise at one of the checkout counters.
“I was told that we were done ringing up a couple of families and I think it was $685 and some change and just a random shopper came up and put his card in,” Truesdale Chief Casey Doyle said. “They said it’s like almost $700, and he was like, ‘I don’t care,’ pulled his card out and walked off. So that’s pretty amazing.”
Doyle said the donor didn’t stick around and that no one had any idea who it was.
He also said it’s not unusual for shoppers to give you money, but someone paying that much to help out is rare.
Truesdale helped 13 families during this year’s Shop With A Cop program, and Doyle said they had enough donations that they could probably help another 13 kids before this Christmas.
It was a similar situation for the Wright City Police Department, which was participating in the Shop With A Cop program for the first time.
“It was a great success,” Chief Tom Canavan said. “The families were very appreciative.”
Wright City police were able to help four families and eight children, and provide meals for those families, Canavan said.
“It was really good for our first time,” he said.
