Transition defense hurts Wildcats in EMO loss

The Wright City Wildcats dropped a home conference game to Clopton Friday night.

Wright City (3-18) fell to Clopton 63-28. Clopton started the game on an 11-0 run. The Wildcats trailed 19-5 after the first quarter and 37-13 at halftime.

Wright City boys basketball coach Ken Brown said Clopton is one of the top three teams in the EMO conference.

“They’re a really tough defensive team,” Brown said. “We didn’t come out hitting any shots like we should. That’s a really good team. Hats off to them. We’ve just got to be better at getting back in transition is what I saw early on.”

Brown thinks the Wildcats were too impatient on the offensive end of the floor during portions of the game. Brown noted it is tough to score on Clopton because they pack the middle of the lane well and are big inside.

“I think we’ve just got to be really patient on offense,” Brown said. “They’re not really going to give you much defensively. You’ve got to make shots but at the same time, you have to stay patient and run your stuff.”

Senior Tim Sheff led Wright City with nine points in the loss. Duan McRoberts added six points for Wright City.

Wright City dropped a road game to conference foe Van-Far Monday.

The Wildcats are scheduled to conclude their regular season schedule with a pair of conference games. They will play at Wellsville-Middletown at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 16. They will wrap up their regular season schedule with a home game against Bowling Green at 7 p.m. Feb. 21.
