Strong fourth inning propels Warrenton to home triumph

Posted

The Warrenton Lady Warriors erased a 2-0 deficit with a seven run fourth inning in their win over Montgomery County Monday.

Warrenton scored 11 runs in their final three offensive innings in their 11-5 win over Montgomery County on Monday. The Lady Warriors scored seven runs in the fourth inning after failing to record a hit in the first three innings.

“They started laying off the high rise ball and they started waiting for the right pitch to hit and attacking strikes,” Warrenton softball coach Chad Berrey said. “We got lucky with a couple of walks to start off the inning. And once we got runners in scoring position, the ball found the bat and it was like a merry go round from there.”

Kylie Witthaus and Makayla Witthaus led off the fourth inning with back-to-back walks. After Maddisyn Hoelscher grounded into a fielder’s choice, Paige Campbell singled to load the bases for Warrenton. The Lady Warriors tied the game on Adee Morgan’s RBI single and Caydynce Haverfield’s bases loaded walk. Warrenton took the lead on Rose Renshaw’s two-run double off the left field wall. They added three runs on RBIs from Audrey Lanzone, Kylie Witthaus and Makayla Witthaus.

After being held scoreless in the fifth inning, Warrenton added four runs in the sixth inning to take an 11-3 lead. Kylie Witthaus, Campbell and Morgan each had an RBI single in the inning. Hoelscher added a sacrifice fly.

Kylie Witthaus pitched all seven innings for the Lady Warriors. Witthaus did not surrender an earned run until the seventh inning in the 11-5 win. Witthaus surrendered two earned runs in seven innings and earned the win. She struck out 10 Montgomery County batters.

Warrenton was scheduled to host St. Charles West Tuesday. The Lady Warriors’ remaining slate includes a pair of conference games and a showdown against Washington High School. The Blue Jays beat Warrenton in the third place game at the state tournament last season.

“They’re the best team in the state right now,” Berrey said. “State rankings came out the past three weeks. They’re number one, they’re rolling. They seem like they’re unbeatable. So if you want to be the best, you got to play the best. So that’s what we’re looking forward to.”
