Liberty Christian cruises to win over Lighthouse Prep

A strong second quarter helped the Liberty Christian Lady Eagles earn a home win over Lighthouse Prep Academy last week.

Liberty Christian (18-6) beat Lighthouse Prep Academy 68-31 last week to snap their two-game losing streak. After carrying a 12-7 lead into the second quarter, the Lady Eagles started the second quarter on a 13-0 run. They led 47-14 at halftime.

“We came out really flat,” Liberty Christian basketball coach Butch Clark said. “That’s really why I decided to go back and trap a little bit just to get some movement. We were standing on defense. And I think that helped energize it a little bit. We got a couple cheap turnovers.”

Clark said the Lady Eagles had not used their zone trap much this year but used it frequently the past couple years. They have not used it much this year to avoid getting into foul trouble.

“Usually, if you can change defenses out of a timeout, you might get a turnover if they’re not ready,” Clark said. “We’ve been doing that for a couple weeks.”

Liberty Christian played 10 players in the second half of their 68-31 win. Liberty Christian outscored Lighthouse Prep Academy 21-17 in the second half.

Anna Meyer led the Lady Eagles with 22 points in the win. Lauren Moss added 20 points for Liberty Christian. Alli Meyer registered a double-double, scoring 16 points and registering 10 assists. She also led the Lady Eagles with eight rebounds. The Lady Eagles earned the win despite playing the game without Kylee Ball, who suffered an injury earlier last week.

“She doesn’t score 20 a game but she’s probably worth 20 a game,” Clark said. “Between offense, defense, rebounding. You’re losing 10, 12 rebounds a game. Eight or nine points and just a steadiness out there.”

With Ball back in the lineup Saturday, Liberty Christian beat St. Clair 70-51. The Lady Eagles jumped out to a 23-11 lead after one quarter. They outscored the Bulldogs 19-4 in the third quarter to carry a 59-34 lead into the final quarter.

Anna Meyer led Liberty Christian with 35 points. Moss and Ball also reached double figures in points in the win. Moss scored 16 points. Ball added 12 points for the Lady Eagles. Alli Meyer registered another double-double, with 11 rebounds and 11 assists.

Liberty Christian is scheduled to play against Rivers of Life Christian Friday. They are slated to begin district tournament play Feb. 6.
